When darkness lays her crimson cloak, Your lamps will call me home. Walking through the market place of Camelot, Selene kept a lookout for any person who appeared to be sick. She had a bag of herbs with her and some money in a small pouch. After her brother died she had been getting less money. He was so sweet people gave them money just to help her look after them. For a second, Selene shivered as if the sun had gone and she took a deep breath to steady herself. She couldn't dwell on the deaths of those she loved. Taking an elder berry out of her bag, she ate it quickly. She was hungry, there had been very little food out in the wild as winter was coming on and she was glad she had managed to get all the herbs on and preserve them. But she needed more than just a few berries. And it wasn't as if she could eat the meat her cats brought in. That was the only thing she couldn't stand about her beloved pets. The killing. But it was in their nature, so she could forgive them. Whatever it took to keep them alive.
Just then, the young girl heard the sound of someone coughing. Turning, she saw an old man, a beggar, leaning against the wall. Her eyes ran over his appearance and she guessed he was coming down with something like the flu or a cold. Taking out some feverfew, she walked over to him and handed the herbs to him. "Here, take this, its feverfew. Try make it into a tea or mix some with your drink, it should help." she told him. He looked at her and asked how much did it cost, she told him nothing unless he could spare something. He gave her a crust of bread and Selene smiled. [color=green["Blessed be." [/color] she told him, before moving off to hungrily eat the bread. It tasted so good and she added some elder berries to it, that sweetened it up just a bit. After her meal, Selene continued to look around for more ill or injured people. Most of the herbs Selene carried on her had some sort of magic put on them to help increase their chances of sucses. She didn't want anyone hurt and her parents had taught her this magic. tears threaterned to overcome her as she remembered her parents and their death. Closing her eyes, Selen tried to drive the images out of her head, then a hand grabbed her shoulder. A high pitched scream came out of her lips and she struggled around to see a guard holding her. "Come with me, witch!" came his voice. "Leave me alone!" shouted Selene, trying to get away, breathing heavily in fear. Her eyes flickered around. Normal people were moving away as more guards came in. "Please, I'm no threat! its jsut herbs, normal herbs!" she pleaded as tears fell down her face. The grip tightened and Selene saw a young man looking at her, he looked normal, but from his gaze, Selene knew that was not true. However, her attention was snapped up by the guard as he threw her down on the ground and pointed his sword at her. A shiver went down Selene and her eyes started to glow golden with magic. "Edwylm!" she scream and a wirlpool of fire shot out and hit the guard, instantly burning him. People started scream and more guards came and circled Selene. The young witch was rising on her feet, not in control of herself, not even thinking, her eyes still glowing with the same colour as her tears stopped. "Fýrwylm!" she shouted and fire flared around her and burnt the guards. After the heat died down, Selene's eyes had returned to normal and she was breathing heavily, looking around, fear in her eyes. Tears started to fall. What happened? its done it again. I can't remember and people are burnt. I have to get away! she thought hurriedly. Running, she moved towards a wall, she knew an alley was on the other side. Ic lyftgelác." she whispered and the air seemed to carry her over the wall. She continued running as fast as possible, heading out of Camelot, but it was shut. Tears flowed from her face as she thought about her two pet cats and headed back into the city to try and hide, but it felt like she was being followed. Moving into one of the alleys, she pressed herself into a dark corner and waited to see what would happen. After a few minutes, the young man walked in through the alley, He uttered soem words and the alley was lit up. He's magic! thought Selene, knowing that he could now see her. I know the secrets of the land and the sky, And you'll hear my voice in the eagle's cry. The days usually passed in the same manor. When he wasn't out secretly saving Camelot with his magic, he was working for Arthur, getting whatever the prince requested. But today he had been given the day off, or he could look at it like that. He had been sent to collect herbs for Gaius as Arther was out hunting and Gaius needed help. So, it seemed like today was going to be quite good. Gaius was out looking for fresh and unusual herbs not sold, while Merlin got the easy job of just looking for the right herbs in shops and buying them. Things couldn't be easier and he had some spare money from Gaius, seeing as he had managed to haggle down the prices, which was something he wasn't usually good at. So, with his free money, Merlin planned on buying something to eat, with Gaius away until later this afternoon, it wasn't likely that anyone would give him some lunch. So maybe Gaius had given him more money than he actually needed and the haggling hadn't done much. Either way, Merlin had some free time and a chance to buy lunch.
Just then, he heard a commotion, a high pitched scream sounded from close buy. Hurriedly the young warlock moved to the source of the cry and saw a young girl, probably fourteen years old in the clutches of a guard. Apparently she was accused of witchery, but she claimed that she was just using herbs. It was possible she was using both and Merlin remembered the trouble he had got Gwen in when he had tried to heal her father. And this girl didn't look like a threat, even if she were a witch or a druid. But then gain, Mordred had appeared innocent and The Great Dragon had prophesied that he would bring the death of Arthur. Just then, the girl changed. Merlin watched with interest as her eyes burned golden and he knew she was going to use magic. The fire killed the guard and merlin was shocked that a child could do that. She had looked so innocent. But she didn't appear to be in control of herself.
His mind went to Freya, the young druid girl had been cursed and appeared lovely and kind. But at midnight she turned into a Bastet and killed. Could this girl be in a similar way? Did she have control over what was happening? Freya had been killed, which she didn't deserve, could Merlin try and make it up to her by saving this young girl? Just then, another wave of fire killed the rest of the guards and the magic fadded from the girl, who now looked terrified and showed no sign of actually wanting to be evil and kill. A small sound like a voice picked up in Merlin's head, the girl's thoughts almost seemed to be projected like what Mordred had done. She didn't appear to understand, but she could be lying...Then, she began to run and used magic once again. So she has been taught. Merlin thought.
Moving, Merling didn't use his magic to chase her, but headed to the gates, that was were she woulf probably be heading, especially due to the course of her path. It wasn't long before he caught up with her, but she was blocked off from going outside and began to move back into the town. Following her at a safe distance, Merlin could see her unease, as if she knew she was being followed. This was certified as she went into an alley. Preparing himself, Merlin turned and walked into the alley. It was dark and no one was about. Searching, he couldn't see the girl. Checking outside the alley, Merlin saw nobody close enough to see and he stepped a few more steps into the darkness. "Fromum feohgiftum on fæder bearme." Merlin whispered and a ball of light appeared. Now, he could see the girl, she was terrified, but she knew what he was and she knew what he was.
"Hello!" Merlin becan cheerful and he saw fear in the girl's eyes. Bending down so he was her height he looked at her. "Its okay, I'm not going to hurt you. I'm like you, see, I have magic. I'm going to try help you." Merlin said. The girl stared at him, she was scared. Merlin becan to think of the places he could take her. But it seemed impossible to hide her anywhere but his room. She couldn't be hidden away from other people, she looked too young. "Do your parents know you here?" he asked softly. Gaius would be angry, he would have to hide her well. With Mordred they had ended up hidding him with Morgana, but they couldn't do that now. "Look, I'm going to try and get you into where I live. I work for Prince Arthur, so they won't check there immediatly, and Gaius will help hide you. He's the Court physician. You like herbs don't you?"
It was easy for merlin to see how she moved away from him when he said he worked for Arthur, but there was intrest as well. Especially when he mentioned Gaius and herbs. Slowly, he held out his hand. Her eyes looked at it, then, tentavily, she placed her tiny hand in his. "We're going to have to be quick, otherwise they might search us. I'll cause a distraction if it looks like their may be a problem. he said. Just then, the girl opened her pouch and took out some herbs and started to scrub her face in an attempt to take the dirt of her face. Then, she rubbed some sort of poultice in her hair that made it seem a different colour from a distance, a darker colour. Merlin frowned. "What's that for?" he asked. "Disguise. But old woman don't like looking grey. They take it and pay money. Not favirote. Prefer healing. the girl said. "You'd get on well with Gaius. I'm merlin by the way." smiled the warlock, finally, the girl was begining to talk. Mordred hadn't done that, he preffered using his mind. "Selene." said the girl softly. "Right, Selene, whatever you put in your hair should help. We'll try not to attract attention, but if we get questioned, your my younger cousin and have been sent becuase your family are dead, okay?" asked Merlin.
Just then, tears started to fall from Selene. "No, its okay, they aren't dead. I'll look for them once we've got you to safety, don't cry." Merlin said hurriedly. "They died ages ago, and so did my brother. The guard killed him. He wasn't even ten." sobbed Selene. "Don't worry, I'll..." Merlin had no idea what to do. He'd probably have to remain looking after her if she were to pretend to be his cousin. And he couldn't let anyone actually know about her. Usually he didn't think things out too much. "I'm going to teach you how to use magic and control it. And you can teach me a bit, okay? And I'll try to keep you hidden, but we may need to disgusie you more often." he said. "But.... what about my house... and cats...?" sobbed the girl. Merlin sighed. "Okay, I'll ask if I can keep your cats, if not, I'll bring them food and we can go vist them every day." he said. Selene then seemed to cheer up a bit. Standing up, Merlin helped pull Selene to her feet.
Then, he walked casually out into the street, however, he checked in case guards came, he didn't want to bump into them. As he came up to the castle, Merlin saw some guards. Using his magic, he turned some large pots over and the guards headed towards there to see if Selene was hidding in them. Merlin ran towards his home, dragging Selene with him and quickly opened the door and pushed her gently inside before going in. Closing the door behind him, Merlin found Selene staring at the herbs and other things Gaius had. "Don't touch those!" he warned, but she had already picked several things up. Her eyes flickered to him. "Disguise." she told him, before she began to mix two different things. Merlin watched as she did this and she uttered some magic words. Then, she rubbed one onto her skin. It seemed to clean her and make her look paler. Then, she used the other one on her hair, so it looked more natural and like almost like his own hair. Then, she plaited her hair. It was harder to see the same girl.
Just then, their was a knock and several guards came ine. "We are looking for the witch, we have been arthorized to search everywhere." he told Merlinerlin, before his eyes rested on the girl. "Who's this?" asked the guard, his voice harsh. Selene flinched and pressed herself against Merlin, keeping behind him. "This is my cousin, her family is dead and she has been sent here. She has only arrived this morning." Merlin told the guard. "She doesn't match the descriptions of the witch we are hunting." said the guard. "Witch?" Merlin asked, trying to appear supprised. "Yes, she took out a few of our guards before disappearing. Its a good thing your cousin arrived early otherwise she would be kept out. But don't you think she'd be better with another woman looking after her?" asked the guard. "Um, yes, I was just getting there. Did you say you wanted to check the house. Gaius may preffer it if you wait for his return." The guard nodded his head and left. Both Merlin and Selene let out a sigh of releif. "Thanks." Selene muttered. "No problem," smiled Merlin. Just then, he heard footsteps coming towards the door and a knock. Was this Gaius, or Arthur or someone else? Merlin took a breath to prepare himself. "Come in," he told whoever it was.

you walk around like you dont know me HOW COULD YOU BE SO HEARTLESS? Guinevere watched in silent fear as several guards rushed past her. She had done nothing wrong, and it wasn't a fear for herself, it was a acquired sub-conscience fear. She had had it since guards had took her and her father, after the where accused for 'sorcery'. She, luckily, was let off, but she could not say as much for her father. She closed her eyes and shook that thought from her head; she didn't want to get upset on account of her father, as it might set off the guards and make them suspicious. One guard stopped momentarily to look at her, he seemed to be checking for something, but with an almost un-conscience shake of his head, he hurried off with the rest of the guards. Gwen wondered what they where looking. She had just been helping down at the kitchen, and she had taken some scraps of food and was bringing them up to Merlin, as she thought he might be hungry. After the guards were out of sight, she continued walking down the hall. She had nearly walked to the Physician chambers where she hoped to find Merlin, when Savannah (a servant well known to be a gossiper) walked past her. She nodded her head with a friendly smile towards Gwen, Gwen did the same back but then stopped. "Savannah, would you happen to know what the guards are looking for?" asked Gwen innocently. "I believe the are looking for a young witch who everyone down at the village is telling me killed a guard!" Savannah exclaimed, obviously excited by the gossip. "Thank-you, Savannah." Gwen said with a kind smile and a nod, then Gwen continued her path down the hallway. She barely got to think of the with before she knocked at Merlin's door. "Come in," said a familiar voice that Gwen reconised as Merlin's. Gwen walked into the room, smiling absentmindedly at Merlin. Hello, Merlin! I thought you might be hungry so I brought you some-" Gwen stopped mid sentence as she noticed a child hiding behind Merlin. Memories of Mordred flashed through her head, and then the guards and what Savannah had said all flew through her head, but Gwen shook herself mentally. Merlin wouldn't bring a witch into the castle, at least she hoped not. "Uh, who's this?" Gwen said, as she flashed a comforting, friendly smile towards the child. As Gwen looked at the girl, all thoughts of sorcery and witches left her mind. To Gwen, this child simply looked scared and innocent, and Gwen's natural maternal instincts made her want to protect the child. Gwen looked up at Merlin, a quizzical smile on her face, as she waited for an answer.

When darkness lays her crimson cloak, Your lamps will call me home. A small gasp sounded from Selene as Merlin asked the person who knocked to come in and the door opened. SHe was terrified already by the guards and she didn't like all the people coming. The last time so many people had visted where she was was when her mother was giving birth to Alvin. The druids had been coming in and they had been friendly enough. But now she was where the people coming in would want to kill her. Just like what had happened to her family.
Moving so she was even more hidden behind Merlin, she clucthed onto his clothes tightly, as if doing that would help her merge into the background. The young witch couldn't remember ever being so childish and afraid. She hoped her mind wouldn't go blank again. Bad things happened then and she couldn't remember what they were. It never made sense. From what she saw, it appeared fire would come and kill people. But she didn't know how, her mind just skipped over what happened then. It was as if in those moments she didn't exist.
Peeping past Merlin, Selene saw a young woman. Large eyes watched her cautiously and also in wonder. She looked very pretty and the young girl had never seen anyone with her kind of complexion. Was it an angel? Had Merlin actually been someone to take you to the place where you went when you died? Was this woman a spirit or the Goddess? Surely Selene had done nothing important enough. Or maybe she would hear judgement from this loverly maiden.
"Is she an angel, or spirt or the Goddess?" Selene asked merlin, her voice getting quieter as she went on, so it was unlikely that the woman heard anything other than the first four or five words. Looking back at the stranger, Selene then pressed herself closer to Merlin. She hoped he would protect her if she were still alive and this was someone trying to kill her. Selene never wanted to have those times when her mind went blank again. They were too scary.
Just then, the woman gave a comforting smile and Selene tried to smile back, although it was nervous. Slowly, she moved from behind Merlin to stand next to him, still pressing herself against him and holding tightly onto his clothes. Decidedly, she kept her mouth shut and hoped that her disguise worked. Of course, this woman could be a trick, trying to purswuade her to move away from Merlin so she could take her to the guards and she could be killed. Tears welled up in her eyes as she thought about that and she shuddered once.

I know the secrets of the land and the sky, And you'll hear my voice in the eagle's cry. As Gwen came in, Merlin let out a sigh. He wasn't sure if he was ready to face Gaius yet, becuase his mentor and friend would have to know the truth. And Gaius would probably not be so pleased. Selene's quick job with herbs to disguise herself would probably be tested. She was quick thinking, trying to look more like him with her new hair colour. Or maybe it was that she could ony make that colour.
"Hey Gwen!" Merlin smiled as she came in. It was always nice to check up with friends. "Have you heard about the sorcereress who just destroyed some guards? Its really bad that it happened now." he said, and he felt Selene tense up from behind him. When gwen started to speak about food, Merlin smiled, usually Gaius gave him food, but today he was out and Merlin hadn't had to the time to buy himself some food. "Thank you. Gaius is out, so I wasn't going to get any lunch. Merlin was about to say, when Gwen saw the girl behind him.
Then, Selene start to speak, asking questions about Gwen. "No, she isn't an angel." he whispered back, amused. It appeared that Selene didn't see many people other than beggars becuase she took quite a jump asking if Gwen was the Goddess, who Merlin knew was someone the druids worshipped. Placing a hand comfortingly on Selene, he moved her to stand beside him, wondering if this was the right way to act with someone who you were pretending was your younger cousin who had lost her immediate family.
"This is my cousin, Selene. She's just got to Camelot. She's here becuase her mother and father are dead." Merlin explained, and Selen started to sniff. "And brother..." she said softly. "He was just four years old..." she said sorrowfully. Merlin guessed he would have to ask more about her family, sometime. "A house fire, Selene was out picking flowers-" "Herbs." said Selene, it looked as if she were trying to forget Gwen and try making up the story before they met any one. Merlin guessed she was shocked by what had happened. "Flowers or herbs, or both. When she got back everyone was dead-" "Apart from the cats." she said, Merlin guessed she was trying to keep as much to the truth as possible. Maybe she wasn't very good at lying, like him.
Just then Selene ducked behind him as if she had remembered Gwen's presence and merlin and rolled his eyes. "The locals didn't know where anyone else who could look after her lived, apart from me, so they sent her here. I think she's been a bit shocked-" Merlin heard a muffled very shocked coming from her and he shook his head and chuckled. "She seems to be getting back on her feet, correcting me all the time!" he told Gwen.
Maybe Gwen could help him out. "Gwen, do you know what would be the best thing to do? She just came here with one of her nextdoor neighbours who just told me what happened and left her. I'm at a bit of a loss on how to actually do this. Gaius is always out healing peolple, and althought she likes hers," Merlin added her liking herbs, becuase he could sense her about to say that she didn't mind helping out anybody with herbs. "He is probably too busy to have a curious girl around him all the time and I don't know where she could sleep and what she should do if she can't help Gaius out, becuase I have to tend to Arthur every day."

you walk around like you dont know me HOW COULD YOU BE SO HEARTLESS? Gwen giggled inwardly as she heard the young girl ask Merlin if she was an angel. Gwen was extremely flattered and blushed, though only a little. As Merlin introduced the girl as 'Selene' his cousin, Gwen nodded her head sweetly towards the girl. Gwen was about to introduce herself to the girl, when Merlin began to tell Gwen the horrific story of Selene's recent past. Gwen stood, gobsmacked, as Selene corrected Merlin on the facts through out his story telling. As Merlin finished off the story with a Merlin typical joking remark, Gwen quickly and sincerely offered her condolences to Selene. She knew what it was like to loose family, and Selene had suffered more than Gwen had. Gwen had only lost her father (though that was the only family she had left, she had never even met her mother) but Selene had lost her whole family. Gwen could only imagine the pain she must be going through.
Gwen stepped forward closer to Merlin as she listened to what he had to say. Gwen thought about this for a moment, then said "If you wish, I could take care of her for a while? Perhaps during the day while you are busy helping Arthur, you could take her to my house and I could watch over her. That way she'll also be out of Gauis's way." Gwen moved closer to Merlin, as to be out of Selene's ear length. "Since her mother is... dead... it would be good for her to have some female influence in her life, as long as some male influence provided by you and Gauis." Gwen stood back again and gave a smile of reassurance to Selene, trying to make sure that Selene didn't think that she was conspiring against her or anything like that. Gwen knew that the loss of loved ones can set ones nerves on edge.

Your lamps will call me home. Selene started at Gwen for a while, keeping herself pressed against Merlin for safety. It was weird because she could feel his voice vibrating. It was easy for the young girl to remember how she had cuddled her parents and felt their voices, and how she had to search for her brother's voice. His was harder to feel, but it was there. Sometimes she wondered why that happened. But it always felt comforting to her. Maybe that was why.
As the woman, Gwen came closer, Selene blinked and took a deep breathe. It was scary to be this close to a normal person again. A normal person who didn't need healing. Merlin wasn't normal, he had magic, but there was no chance that Selene was going to say a word about that. She shivered once and then sneezed. She wasn't comming down with anything, it was that she shivered when she felt scared, but not threaterned and that often caused her to sneeze.
Just then, the lady started to talk to Merlin, about how she could look after her. But then would Selene be able to visit her cats? And what about the herbs. SHe knew a lot and maybe Gaius could teach her. But she wasn't saying for all the time. But if she found out. Only the poor and ill were nice to Selene. Merlin was different. He was magic, like the druids. But this was a normal person. Normal people didn't really like her. But she did appear nice. Biting her lip, Selene looked up at Merlin, who had just comunicated to Gwen and she hadn't heard anything. It made her a bit scared, but Merlin gave her an encouraging smile. "Its fine." he promised.
Slowly, mocing forward and taking a shallow gulp of air, Selene smiled at Gwen, nervously. "Thank you for your offer, Miss. It is most kind of you to accept me. My name is Selene Eruth and I hope I can return the favour to you, as I hope I can return the favour my cousin, Merlin has given me." she said, her voice shaking, when she said the last bit, she turned to look at Merlin. He had ben kind to her and this Gwen seemed to be trusted by him and she seemed nice enough. But how could she return the favour? She owed Merlin so much for getting her away from the soldiers and death and Gwen would be putting her neck on the line.

I know the secrets of the land and the sky, And you'll hear my voice in the eagle's cry. As Gwen spoke, Merlin thought about her words. It would be dangerous for Gwen if she got involved and it could put her life on the line, which was something Merlin could not risk. When Mordred had been in the castle both Gwen and Morgana had been at risk. Morgana had ended up having harsh words with the King. It was not something that people like him and Gwen could risk. Uther wouldn't raise his voice to them. It would spell the death of all who helped her and the young girl herself.
"That's a very kind offer and it would make things so much more easier, even though she does seem to love herbs enough to want to help Gaius out with anything. She'd get on his nerves that's for sure! But she may get on your nerves and I don't want my cousin to burdern you. Plus the guards will be looking out for any girls the age of the witch that escaped them. Especially new commers." he said, not trying to link Selene to what she had done. But he had to try and keep Gwen safe. He didn't want to be the cause of any one's death.
Just then, Gwen moved closer and told hims something in a hushed voice. It made sense. Selene would need the influence of a woman. She couldn't hang around him, becuase when he was working, Arthur would be there and she wouldn't be spending any time with girls. And if she stayed with Gaius she would be working with the ill and dead, not something good for someone so young. And she wouldn't know how to act as a woman, how to fit in. "That does make sense." he nodded.
However, he would still need to teach her magic and how to control it. Especially how to control it. In the street she had lost control and killed. Maybe that was why she wasn't with the druids. But if they couldn't teach her, what chance did he have? But he would have to try. "Selene, I'm sure Gaius can teach you about herbs when your around, but in the day, it may be better if you stay with Gwen. She's very nice and I trust you not to get into trouble. And if you have spare time, I'll have to teach you how to stay out of trouble, yes?" as he spoke about teaching her to keep out of trouble, Merlin hoped she understood that he would teach her how to control her magic. She seemed to understand becuase she looked a bit braver.
Selene stepped forward and gave what appeared to be a little speach and Merlin smiled at that. "Don't worry for now, Selene. You've had a lot to cope with." he told her, giving her a comforting pat on the back. That was what he should do if his cousin had just lost her close family and arrived in Camelot, right? She looked nervous, and Merlin hoped that she would be alright. With Gwen she would be safe, but he had no idea wha killing some guards would do to her mind.
Then, he remembered something. Had Gwen mentioned him being hungry. Had she been about to say something about food. He was hungry, he hadn't had time to eat at all. "Gwen, were you going to say something about food earlier?" he asked. Selene seemed to pay more attention for a second. Then, she nervously brought some berries out. "If you are hungry you can eat these elder berries. They taste nice and give strength. We only had them on the journey." she told him. Merlin guessed that meant that she had been mainly living off them. "Well, it appears I have a feast!" he smiled. There were just a small handful of berries, but this was probably a lot for Selene. "We can all share a lunch." he smiled.
